This case explores the changes wrought by the "sharing economy", examining the innovations and controversies surrounding the online ride-hailing service Uber. It provides a unique overview of the challenges posed by new business models like Uber's, which use the internet to link individual providers of goods and services to customers. Raising significant economic, social and environmental sustainability issues, it asks: what are the responsibilities of "sharing economy" companies? More specifically, are they merely a "technological platforms" facilitating transactions for private individuals or do they have the same responsibilities as real-world companies such as transportation businesses, hotels and employment agencies?

  • To examine the difficulty of defining the "sharing economy" and explore how various possible definitions influence such companies' responsibilities and how they are regulated.
  • To facilitate discussion of issues such as labor relations and regulatory oversight of companies created by emerging technologies.
  • To explore the potential for greater sustainability through the adoption of "sharing economy" business models.

  1. What are the psychological aspects of working from home? How does it impact you as a leader? How does it impact your team members?
  2. People management—how to hire, onboard, give critical performance feedback and/or terminate an employee in an online world.
  3. How to develop and/or maintain those personal relationships in an online environment, as you did in the office.
  4. What technology tools (beyond basics like teleconferencing software) can help enable working with my finance team?

Professionals that commonly work with the various financial statement have routinely converted them to a common fund, to easily identify changes in their numbers and for comparison to other business' financial statements. A simple 1-variable 2-dimensional graph can provide very meaningful information about these statements.  And, a 2-variable 2-dimensional graph, a scatter plot, might give even more insight.  So, how might accounting and other finance professionals find even more insight from an nth-dimensional analysis?  By using the Pythagorean Theorem's calculation of Euclidean distance.
